This is the opener, so the idea is to get clear of home, settle into the ride properly and enjoy the run without turning day one into a marathon. We’ll be trading the familiar run out of Canberra for mountain country by the end of the day, and Katoomba gives us a solid base to kick off from. Plenty of accommodation, easy food options, and a good place to pull up for the night before the ride really gets into its stride.
From Katoomba, we’ll head out of the mountains and across toward the Hawkesbury, then through Wisemans Ferry country and out toward Putty Road.
We’ll go from mountain and valley country into the river sections (where it’s hopefully warmer!) work through the ferry area, then stretch the legs properly on one of the state’s better-known bike roads. Much of this route is covered in these two “Top Roads” posts:
Saturday night location is still to be confirmed, so I’m leaving that flexible for now. Could be local to Sydney, or we might make a break for the coast to be ready for Sunday.
Rather than just pointing the bikes back toward Canberra and grinding out kilometers on the highway, we’ll attempt to finish the Sunday of the last ride that was deviated due to weather: Macquarie Pass, Kangaroo Valley and Cambewarra.
