Big Bore Blat 2024

  • Late spring run into the high country, down to the coast, through the Yarra Valley finishing in Melbourne for Adrian's 50th birthday party. Looking to be 5 days total, starting on Wednesday 30th October; racking up around 2000KMs. Epic back roads, some dirt, plenty of twisties; the areas we're going to at this time of year - heaven on earth with a bike.

Day 1 - (Wed 30th Oct)

Canberra to Kosciuszko via the Snowy Hydro scheme, taking in the dams, power stations, pumping stations, etc. Roughly a 450KM day from Wee Jasper. Intent is for everyone to meet at “Benny’s Busted Battery Corner” (opposite Wee Jasper Public School) at 0830. Then head into Tumut for brunch; from the Wee Jasper meeting point to Tumut, is approx 50KM of dirt.

From there:

  1. Blowering Power Station
  2. Tumut 3 Power Station
  3. Tumut 2 Power Station
  4. Tumut 1 Power Station
  5. Tumut Reservoir
  6. Tooma Reservoir
  7. Murray 2 Power Station
  8. Murray 1 Power Station
  9. Geehi Dam (depending on time)

Finishing the day in Jindabyne, staying at Alpine Gables.

Day 2 - (Thur 31st Oct)

Thredbo out to Charlottes Pass to start the morning, finishing the Snowy Hydro scheme showcase:

  1. Guthega Dam Wall
  2. Guthega Power Station 
  3. Island Bend Reservoir
  4. Charlottes Pass
  5. Jindabyne Dam approx 125KMs total

Brunch in Jindabyne before heading down to Lakes Entrance.

Two options here:

  1. Barry Way (Dirt) - Approx 225KMs / 85KM is dirt
  2. Monaro Hwy (Tar) - Approx 327KMs

Staying at Lakeside Waterfront Hotel.

Day 3 - (Friday 1st Nov) 

Lakes Entrance to the Yarra Ranges

  1. Walhalla Village for lunch, 
  2. Mt Baw Baw (approx 35KM dirt)

Approx. 400KMs total for the day, much twisties!

Finishing at Warburton - The Alpine Retreat

 

Day 4 (Sat 2nd Nov)

Short(er) run to Adrian’s place, around the loop and down the fabled twisties of “The Black Spur” into Melbourne, help set up for his 50th bash and then get merry!

Approx 200KMs total for the day.

Staying at The Dingley Hotel

Day 5 (Sun 3rd Nov)

Drink a bunch of water, pop some painkillers, greasy breakfast, pull a helmet on and head back to Canberra via the shortest route possible. If we’re in a bad way, I don’t mind leaving late and stopping half way, getting home Monday morning.
