Canberra → Yass → Gundagai → Holbrook → Howlong → Corowa → Mulwala | (Approx. 420 km)
Friday is primarily the convergence day, with riders making their way in from Canberra and Melbourne before converging on the Murray River.
We’ll take the run through the Brindabellas to Tumut, Tumbarumba, Jingellic and Walwa.
Aim is to have everyone meet up in Corowa (at the Distilling Co?), then cruise down to Mulwala for the night.
Once everyone is checked in, we’ll head out for dinner and the official opening of the ride.
Overnight stop: Mulwala
Mulwala → Rutherglen → Chiltern → Eldorado → Woolshed Falls → Beechworth → Milawa → Oxley → Whitfield → Oxley | (Approx. 250 km)
Saturday is intentionally lighter on kilometres, allowing enough time to explore the goldfields and Kelly Country stops without turning the day into a rushed sequence of quick snaps and fuel stops.
We’ll leave Mulwala after breakfast and make the short run through to Rutherglen; where we can take a happy snap in front of the oversized Rutherglen Wine Bottle.
From Rutherglen we’ll continue through to Chiltern, stopping for coffee and a to check out the the historic goldrush-era town. The route then turns toward Eldorado, where we’ll visit the massive Eldorado Dredge.
We’ll then continue through the valley to Woolshed Falls. This area combines gold-rush history with some of the region’s best scenery and provides a good chance to stretch the legs and check out the falls before continuing on to Beechworth.
Beechworth will be the main stop of the day, despite coming back tomorrow night. We’ll park the bikes in the historic centre and visit check out the Old Beechworth Gaol and courthouse. If we can get in at the right time, we might be able to grab a scheduled tour of the gaol.
Figure on lunch at Bridge Road Brewers; decent pizzas and local brew, just remember we’ve got a few more hours in the saddle! After lunch, we’ll leave Beechworth and ride through Tarrawingee into the Milawa region and depending on timing, we may stop briefly for coffee, cheese and/or takeaway supplies before continuing through Oxley and Moyhu.
The final section into Whitfield follows the King Valley, we’ll also stop at Powers Lookup which overlooks the entire region - good opportunity for a drone shot or two. Once done at Powers, we’ll continue on to Mansfield where the road comes out of the King Valley through forest and farmland, with a mixture of tight corners, faster sweepers and mountain views.
Overnight stop: Mansfield
Mansfield → Tolmie → Stringybark Creek → Tatong → Greta → Glenrowan → Beechworth | (Approx. 200 km)
Sunday is the main riding and bushranger day of the trip; again the KMs are pretty easy to take in the scenery and history elements of the ride.
After breakfast, we’ll stop briefly at the Mansfield Police Memorial. The memorial recognises the officers who were killed at Stringybark Creek in 1878. It is a pretty key part of the story and worth taking in for completeness.
If conditions are dry and the roads are confirmed open, we’ll continue through Tolmie and take the forest roads into Stringybark Creek. If the road is wet, muddy, chopped up or closed, we’ll ditch the dirt section and use the sealed route through Swanpool and Benalla.
From Stringybark Creek, the planned route continues through Tatong and the Greta district. We may make a short stop near Greta, where the Kelly family lived before continuing into Glenrowan.
Glenrowan will be the final major history stop of the ride. We’ll visit the siege precinct, walk around the railway area and get the obligatory group photograph beneath the giant Ned Kelly statue.
The final run of the day will take us from Glenrowan back into Beechworth. Dinner, we’re thinking of being at Tanswell’s Hotel, a historic Beechworth pub with links to bushranger Harry Power (Power’s Lookout).
Overnight stop: Beechworth
Beechworth → Tallangatta → Walwa → Tooma → Elliot Way → Adaminaby → Tharwa | (Approx. 400 km to Tharwa)
Sunday will begin with breakfast in central Beechworth. We’ll then head up to Lake Hume and Tallangatta before putting the lake in the rear-view and heading toward the mountains and the Murray River again at Walwa.
We’ll follow the Murray along to Tooma and Paddys River before the next epic session of twisties on the Elliot Way. Being a Monday, hopefully the road is quiet and we can use the bikes for what they’re made for!
With the Elliot Way done and our rear tyres begging for mercy, we’ll turn right onto Snowy Mountains Highway and on to Adaminaby, before taking Bobeyan Road to Tharwa and home.
